The House and its Systems

When doing repair work in house, you will sometimes realize that  you don't know where a specific system of your house is located. In fact, you might not have realized before that your house really consists of several systems working together to help keep everything under control and you and your family living comfortably.

These systems include the plumbing system, the electrical system, the gas supply system. Here is a little map to help you move around:

1) The Water Supply - If the water that comes into your house comes from a water company, then it is likely that there is main control outside of your house that can close the flow to your house. This control, though, can only be operated by the water company.

The good news is that a main water control for your house can be found near the water meter on the outside. This control will be either in the form of a gate valve with a round handle or a ball valve. This is the control to use when it is necessary to shut off the water supply.

2) Gas System - The natural gas that comes for your heating system, hot water, and for the appliances at your home comes from the street through a pipe. This pipe connects to a meter that records the activity and the gas that is used. A control valve is usually located near the meter that can turn the supply on and off. This control valve is often reserved for only company.

3) Electric Service - The electric system of your house is a delicate one. Remember not to touch the electric service panel when in contact with water. The electric service panel, is the control unit for the electric current that powers up your home.
