Safety: Using a ladder safely and effectively

You are all excited and can wait to get started on your home remodeling project. Now, you realize this project will require you to go up a little higher than expected. Yes, the need of a ladder will be required. Now, it is important to mention that using a latter safely starts the moment you have to choose the type of ladder you will use. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a ladder and also some safety tips, because your safety is of top priority.

Choosing a ladder

Materials: There are different materials that are used for making ladders. There are wooden ladders, aluminum ladders, and fiberglass ladders. Your project will dictate which one is the best. Although wood ladders are less expensive than aluminum ladders, they tend to rot and weather faster. Aluminum ladders are lightweight and can take more abuse, albeit more expensive. However, aluminum ladders should not be used when working around electricity. Fiberglass ladders are a pretty versatile, lightweight, and study choice. The downside, of course, is the price.

Height: For working with standard, 8-foot ceilings, a 5 foot step ladder will work great for inside and most of outside jobs.

Strength: The American National Safety Institute has a rating system for ladders. Make sure to pay attention to the rating type so that your ladder will hold the appropriate weight.

Safety Tips

- When using a ladder, it is important to avoid using slippery shoes and loose clothing, as this can contribute to accidents.

- Follow a check-up routine for your ladder. Check to make sure it is clean of grease and dirt. Also, make sure all bolts and nuts are tight in place.

- A very important tip: make sure your ladder is placed on an even surface. It is also a good idea to have some extra help around. If you feel the ladder is wobbly, ask someone to help you by holding the ladder. However, make sure that no two persons are using one ladder at the same time.

- When climbing or descending a ladder, make sure to put your hands, not in the treads, but on the side rails.
